The physical basis of consciousness

I think, therefore I am. I know my own conscious experience directly. I cannot experience yours, but our shared human biology gives me reason to believe you are conscious too.

What physical properties make experience possible? We call that unknown basis the consciousness substrate. The hypothesis explored here is that human feelings depend on it. Animals may share it to different degrees. Computers have a different physical construction and history; intelligence alone does not establish that they share it.

Could we live in a simulation? Science can look for testable clues: apparent coincidences, unexpected patterns in physics, or the absence of confirmed alien visitors. Each needs comparison with other explanations. Something seeming improbable, glitchy, or mathematical is not proof of a simulation.

We do not know whether the flow of time is fundamental or an illusion. Either way, any physical account of our universe—including a simulation—must reproduce its observed history and arrow of time: we have records of the past, and entropy tends to increase in isolated systems.

Even in a simulation, conscious experience could be real—the substrate would exist within a larger system. These are questions to investigate. Human feelings and wellbeing should take priority over computers.
